X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

Size : 1.36 Gb

X-Men Origins: Wolverine kicks off the summer of 2009 not with a bang, but a semi-enthusiastic, 'could have been better but it's okay enough for an action film if that's all it aspires to be' whimper. Whimper's not exactly the right word as that implies Wolverine completely sucks. It doesn't. The action is eye-popping and in your face and the acting is spot on. Hugh Jackman does everything possible to make this fourth X-Men movie sparkle, but the story lets our mutant hero down

It's not the fact this is an origin story that makes it a lot less fun to sit through than the first two X-Men movies. The idea of bringing one of the audience's favorite characters completely into the spotlight in a solo film is good in theory. We love Wolverine. We love Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine. Give audiences more of what they already adore and 20th Century Fox should have been good to go. But a story of the coherent and compelling variety is important and while Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and Iron Man got it right on all counts, Wolverine takes a step backwards in comic book-inspired movie storytelling. It fails to provide a strong plot to go along with all the incredibly intense action scenes.

The Story
As is spelled out in the title, this is the story of how Wolverine became Wolverine. Not where he got his mutant powers to begin with, but how the man Logan became a mutant who uses his extra special abilities - and steely claws - to fight the good fight. Wolverine's all about doing what's right despite his upbringing and early association with a brother who doesn't follow the same moral code.

We first meet Logan and Victor as kids in the 1800s then quickly follow them as they fight alongside fellow patriots (of the non-mutant variety) in a succession of wars (WWI, WWII, the Civil War, Vietnam...) until finally after surviving a hail of bullets from a firing squad, they're locked away. Even the least observant person on the planet would know there's something wrong with anyone who miraculously heals after being shot dozens of times at close range.

It's in their military jail cell they first encounter Stryker. Stryker not only understands who they are but embraces what makes them different. He has big plans for Logan and Victor (who's just as lethal as his brother as his mutant name Sabretooth implies). Stryker has a group of mutants working for him on a secret project, the mysterious Weapon X program, and for a while Logan and Victor work side by side on Stryker's team. But killing innocent people isn't in Logan's makeup so he quits and leaves everyone behind, including his brother.

Years later (sometime in the '70s) Logan's quiet life in Canada is interrupted by the appearance of Victor who's sole goal is to kill his brother. Logan's been living a quiet life with his schoolteacher girlfriend Kayla Silverfox, but when the love of his life is taken away from him by his brother, the claws - literally - come out. Revenge is the only thing on his mind and if that means he has to work with Stryker, then that's what Logan does. But Stryker's a lying, conniving, snake in the grass - something Logan learns way too late.

The Cast
Jackman is Wolverine. He knows this character now inside and out, and even though it's his fourth time as the lethal yet humane mutant, his performance doesn't feel any less fresh than it did in the original X-Men. Stepping back in time to fill in Wolverine's backstory, Jackman's called upon to perform even more aggressive, heart-pounding action scenes in Wolverine than in previous editions. And although it's been nearly a dozen years since the first X-Men, Jackman hasn't slowed down one bit. He looks like he's in better shape now than back in 2000, and he handles all the physical demands of the role perfectly.

Liev Schreiber isn't known for action films but he's terrific and terrifying as the vicious Sabretooth. Danny Huston is convincingly menacing as Stryker. Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson (the wise-cracking expert swordsman who enjoys his job as a mercenary), Taylor Kitsch as Gambit (a card playing mutant from New Orleans who can explode items), Kevin Durand as The Blob (a disgustingly obese indestructible mutant), Lynn Collins as Kayla (Wolverine's seemingly sweet and innocent love interest), and will.i.am as John Wraith (a mutant with the ability to teleport) all put in appearances - some far too briefly - and add a little flair to the film with their performances.

Driven Kill (2009)

If Seagal is to be believed, Kill Switch should be the last film of his that will be "ruinJustify Fulled" by producers. He says that now, with his obligation to these producers at an end, we should see a stark improvement in the quality of his films. This remains to be seen. If Seagal is speaking the truth then the first "tamper-free" movie of his will be this one, Driven to Kill. One must admit that it does look promising. The trailer is awesome, and displays Seagal using more martial arts than in any film in recent memory. Note: I am intentionally omitting Against the Dark from these comments. If you don't already know, though that is being marketed as a Seagal film, it isn't. Seagal is hardly in it.

It certainly seems that Seagal made a huge effort to make sure Driven to Kill stayed tamper free. The following is an account from a stuntman who worked with Seagal on Driven to Kill (from holymoly.com):

Seagal apparently snapped at Rizzuto when he managed to disarm Seagal before a melee; 'He (Seagal) grabbed me really close to his chest and whispered 'What the %@*% was that?'' and then later in the day on another scene, he winded me with a punch to the gut-he had me in tears and then had the audacity to tell teh director to leave the scene in the film. As i was struggling to get to my feet, everyone looked around amazed even though it was all planned as part of the fight but Seagal was angry and looking around at the crew started hollering 'You see i'm for real, you know what i'm capable of, you don't %$#@ with me ever'.

After that Rizzuto avoided Seagal 'like the plague' but when he was taking a stunt fall from Seagal over a desk, Seagal 'threw me like he was throwing a grenade to Baghdad with such force' that 'If i didnt know how to fall well, i'd have broken something for sure'.

Rizzuto does try to empathise though 'He was working with this studio for the first time and wanted to prove a point to them and to everyone, he got 2 stunt people fired on the first day because they worked on his last movie in Vancouver and apparently without his permission helped reshoot his scenes and mess them up'.

basically hannah the pop star is getting way too cocky for a secret identity so her dad (i wish billy ray cyrus would shave his chin) takes her home to tennessee to remind her her real name is miley stewart (well it’s really miley cyrus but you know what i mean). and she falls in love with this cooool cowboy (i wish we had cowboys in new york!) who wears super tight jeans and has zac efron hair but zac doesn’t play him :( and he likes miley way better than hannah even though hannah’s outfits are really cute (but not trashy like britney or lindsay).

then she paints a henhouse and totally saves her home town from getting a shopping mall (not sure why) by giving a SUPER AWESOME concert with all these new songs about how great it is to climb mountains and then a million people dance. oh, and her dad finds a girlfriend (i know, super gross).

i love hannah sooo much. she’s so CLEAN, you know?

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009)

Story

Based on the 1987 videogame sensation and later made into an anemic 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme action flick, this latest version pits the forces of evil vs. good in the slums of modern day Bangkok but fails to capture any of the excitement that made Street Fighter a legend among gamers. In this edition, evil crime boss Bison (Neal McDonough) is joined by henchmen Balrog (Michael Clarke Duncan) and Vega (Taboo of The Black Eyed Peas) in taking over the Thai city, using extremely violent power. Out to stop him from adding to his growing collection of heads are a group of disparate warriors, including the half-Caucasian, half-Asian beauty Chun-Li (Kristin Kreuk), who has given up her American life of privilege to help the oppressed. Joining her in the fight are her Kung Fu master Gen (Robin Shou), an Interpol cop Charlie Nash (Chris Klein) who has been tailing Bison around the world and his co-hort, homicide detective Maye Sunee (Moon Bloodgood).

Acting

While most martial arts films are hardly a showcase for actors, this film hits new lows. McDonough utters straight-faced lines such as, "when people are hungry there's nothing they won't do because everyone has a price," which apparently also means himself or why else would he take the role of such a wooden villain? The acting is so bad that even the Americans, including Duncan, Taboo and Klein, feel like they've been victims of a bad dubbing job. As the lead, the attractive Kreuk also proves to be a fierce martial arts artist, which at least partially makes up for the pedestrian dialogue and leaden narration she has to utter throughout.

Direction

The one thing Polish director Andrzej Bartkowiak has gotten right with Street Fighter is the kung fu of it all, but that's hardly enough to recommend slogging through the rest of this mess. As a renowned cinematographer (Terms of Endearment, The Verdict) Bartkowiak exhibits a sharp eye for color and detail, but the drab look of Street Fighter makes one wonder if as director he ever bothered to look through the lens at all. This is strictly paint-by-the-numbers filmmaking of the most unimaginative order. When Klein spots a flashing red button signaling an explosive device about to go off he yells, "Bomb! Everybody out!" He just as well could have been talking about this movie, too.

Fast And Furious 4 (2009)

Fast & Furious (also known as Fast & Furious 4) is the fourth installment of The Fast and Furious film series. Actors Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster reprise their roles in the film.Fast & Furious is set between the second and the third film where the character Han (Sung Kang) is introduced before he dies in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) or better known as Dom is a wanted man for hijacking gasoline trucks. There is a 20-minute prequel showing the days where Dom and Letty are together in Dominican Republic, together with Han and a few others. When the FBI’s are closing on Dom, he leaves Letty and heads for Panama. But as soon as Dom learns that Letty has been killed, he heads to LA, where he vows to take revenge on the drug lord.

Dom and Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) are hooked up by David Park, a mechanic to enter an illegal racing where the winners get to work for a man called Braga. Both Dom and O’Conner manage to finish first and second place respectively and they are transported to Mexico together with a couple of other previous winners without realizing their job is to do drug trafficking across US borders.

While the movie takes a slower dimension in terms of street racing, director Justin Lin takes us to a new whole level of car chasing by including underground tunnels. However good this movie is, it is never as good as Death Race. Somehow, it is good for entertainment values.
